Auburn, CA

Auburn, California, is the county seat of Placer County and was an important location during the California Gold Rush. The historical prominence of the area led to the city's inclusion as a California Historical Landmark in 1948. The first discovery of gold here on May 16th, 1848, is credited to French miner Claude Chana. Soon after, the settlement known as Woods Dry Diggins was renamed by miners after their hometown of Auburn, NY. The people here were some of the most determined of the era, as the town burned down three times between 1855 and 1863, only to be rebuilt and prosperous. To commemorate his accomplishment, Claude Chana's statue is close to the area where he first panned for gold.

For a visual and interactive experience of the area's history, spend a day at The Gold Rush Museum. The mining tunnel exhibit puts you in the boots of the early miners. You can also test your skills in the indoor panning stream. The museum is also responsible for the Gold Rush Program. Fourth-graders can take part in the online interactive course and experience the feeling of being part of history and searching for their fortune. The program was created based on 4th-grade curriculum requirements, and teachers can incorporate it into the yearly curriculum.

Downtown Auburn is an incredible district full of shopping, restaurants, and scheduled events. During restaurant week, you can find discounts and pre-fixed meals for your desired culinary delights. You can find the area's best offerings in Italian, Mexican, Japanese, American Fusion, and more. At the Little Belgium Deli, sample some of the finest Belgium brews on tap, some for a limited time only. Ninja Sushi offers fresh sushi and sashimi, hot ramen, and traditional Japanese fare.

To fully take in the area's scenic beauty, the city is renowned for its hiking trails. You can find 72 trails for most hiking levels at the Auburn State Recreation Area. The #1 trail is for moderate hikers. The Clementine Trail to Clark's Pool is four and a half miles long and climbs to almost 700 feet. For an easier time, the #1 easy trail is the Western States to Calcutta Falls. To catch the running falls, it's best to take this one in the winter or spring.

After a day in the sun, wash down the trail dust with some award-winning Spanish Wine at Vina Castellano. The Mendez family has been perfecting the area's best for over forty years, including their Tempranillo and Abuelito Red. For a dining experience like no other, visit the Mt. Vernon Winery. Wine Club members can experience the Wine Cave Dinners multiple times a year. Set in a candlelit cave, chefs prepare a five or 6-course meal paired with wines selected by the Master Wine Maker.
